Name- The Palace of Illusions
Author- Chitra Banerjee DivakaruniThe palace of illusions is a book written by an amazing female writer which tells the story of Mahabharata but from the point of view of Panchaali or Draupadi, daughter of Drupad, wife of Pandavas and the queen of Hastinapur.
We have always heard that every story has a different perspective and its always important to know those perspectives. Hence i decided to read this book. I have read Mahabharata for a lot of times and even watched it on the television. But reading this book was a totally different experience for me.
In Mahabharata we don't actually get to know all the characters in detail. But from this book i came to know the character of panchaali, the pandavas and all the people related to her.
Also the writer has mentioned some new things that i wasn't aware about, for example, just like Sanjay who had described the war to Dhritarashtra and who was the witness of the major war, Panchaali too was the witness and she too has watched it just like sanjay.
While reading this book the images that had formed in my mind about every person and everything was totally changed. For example, i had imagined that Karna was as cruel as other Kauravas and had always hated him. But when i read this book i actually fell in love with him. She has loved him so much all the years of her life and he too has loved her. Knowing that a part of me ached.
Its a mythological fiction and just like this perspective there will be some other things that we may come to know when we read the same story but with a different perspective.
This book is an amazing creation by the writer and i would love to recommend it to all those who wanted to read this or love reading about mythological events. Though it looks like a fat book still its a great read. I have loved the way the writer has designed the character of panchaali and the way she has told the story and her thoughts about every single, small or big thing.
Overall its an amazing book to read. Though written by a female and about a female its not leaning towards feminism and hence its a beautiful read.
